R&B Sensation H.E.R. Reveals Sultry Tresses On Rolling Out Cover, Styled by Monaè Everett

First, let me say that I love styling H.E.R. (Having Everything Revealed) for editorial shoots. Most recently, H.E.R’s beautiful curls were displayed on the cover of RollingOut magazine. The cover shoot showcases H.E.R. letting her hair down in waves that cascade to her mid back, adding just the right amount of drama, softness, and sass to the tatted, swagged out R&B songstress’ cover photo. Using a keen eye for detail I crafted the perfect look for this cover shoot that captured the mood of H.E.R.’s music.

For the RollingOut shoot, I sprayed her damp hair with Ouidad’s Advanced Climate Control Detangling Spray and applied the Ouidad’s Advanced Climate Control Heat and Humidity Gel using the rake and shake technique. I diffused her hair with the BabylissPRO blow dryer. After the hair was dry, I sprayed the hair with Oribe Heat Lacquer spray and a little Ouidad Mongongo Oil Multi-Use Curl Treatment. Next, I used the BabylissPRO Nano Titanium 3/4″ curling iron to touch up any loose curls. I used a wide tooth comb to pick apart the curls and add fullness. Lastly, I finished the style with the IGK Laid Back Defrizz and Anti-Static Spray.

The styles I created for H.E.R. are not only featured in Rolling Out magazine but also in a 3-part video series published on Rolling Out’s site featuring exclusive access to the cover shoot behind the scenes.

Take a Look at Some of These Weather-Proof, Festival-Ready Hairstyles for Naturally Curly and Kinky Textures

Models Mominatu and Fan Banks posing with styles by Monaé after a live hair demo at CurlFest

This festival season the curls have ruled! However, for those with naturally curly and kinky textures, the curls and kinks may not always keep their shape, especially when you throw in a mix of humid weather, heavy dancing, crowds of people brushing against you, and more elements you can’t control at outdoors festivals. I recently joined CurlFest on their Facebook Live broadcast to explain some of the best practices for keeping hair cute, neat, and controlled during the outdoor festival season– no matter the hair type.

While on the CurlFest Facebook Live broadcast, I demonstrated on two kinky and curly-haired models to share the following two tips for haute, easily controlled festival-ready hairstyles:

  1. Be creative and add jewels to the hair in multiple sections for photo-worthy hair from every angle!
  2. Rock big, fluffy hair, but feel free to add braided details to the front of the hair. It doubles as a functional design.

For festival hair, you want your hair to be big and eye-catching.  Don’t do your normal pull-back style. Go big. Accessorize. Add jewels. Add some gold. Add some silver. Make people look at you. You took your time to get dressed and do your hair. Bask in the glory of your big, bouncy tresses.

Behind the Scenes of Seasons of Love Beauty

Did you catch Lifetime’s Seasons of Love? I was the Key Hairstylist on set. It was an amazing opportunity and I learned a lot on set. The film stars Taraji P Henson, Letoya Luckett, the legendary Mrs. Gladys Knight, Shannon Kane, Ana Isabelle, and Method Man. For an inside look at my mane moves and details about the movie, see below.

Taraji’s light-hearted character, Jackie, needed a fun hairstyle to match. We styled her medium length bob with Bumble and Bumble products to keep each style voluminous and touchable. The Defrizz kept her hair both smooth and bouncy.

Latoya plays a “no nonsense” career woman. To keep each strand of her mid-back length hair in place I used a pomade to smooth her fly-aways and the Redken Shine Flash spray to keep her mane shiny and beautiful.

Gladys Knight, the family matriarch kept her short styles chic. Using a ¾ inch flat iron I beveled her hair into place. Her hair was coiffed with Redken Shine Flash spray and detailed with the Sebastian Reshaper Spray.

We kept Imani’s, played by Shannon Kane, enviable curls intact by using Deva Chan products. We started each day by cleansing with the No Poo, conditioning with the Heaven in Hair, and setting the curls with the Arc Angel gel. We added a braid in most scenes to highlight Imani’s romantic personality.

Ana Isabelle’s hair was a huge aspect of Randi’s vivacious character. We used the Bumble and Bumble Defrizz and Schwarzkopf Grip mousse during her blow dry. Whether her hair was flat ironed pin straight or curled into big sexy waves, these added shape, hold, and volume to each style.

The two struggle to determine what truly matters to them in this story of life, love, and family. Taraji P. Henson stars and executive produces, while Gladys Knight, Shannon Kane, and Cliff “Method Man” Smith also star.

Lusters’ YOU Be-Natural Product Launch Event in NYC

Luster’s has done it again. The same people who brought you my childhood go to Pink Oil Moisturizer, have released a new product line, this one target’s the natural hair sector. It’s their new YOU Be-Natural Line. Which is all about learning to work with your natural hair texture.

Luster’s You Be-Natural Botanical Curl Stretch and Defining Treatment was the featured product of the night. According to hairstylist, Lusters’ ambassador, Kevin “K.P. the Texture Man”  Pendleton, the You Be-Natural Botanical Curl Stretch and Defining Treatment alone doesn’t stretch and relax the curl, it’s the (optional) heat used with the treatment. Hair color, relaxers, and other chemicals can strip the protein in hair by at least 30%. The treatment is made of plant-based amino acids that bind to the hair, restoring any protein loss. This allows moisture to penetrate the hair shaft.

Pendelton explained that if you can choose to use heat for more intense results. The product is sealed into the hair shaft by the flat-iron and acts as an anti-humectant, so you can expect less frizz. Most of us wouldn’t mind minimizing our frizz, especially in the spring and summer. YOU Be-Natural’s number 1 claim is that they simply stretch your hair’s natural curl with no risk of permanent changes. They even claim that the with proper care and the use of sulfate-free shampoos you can expect your stretched, reduced frizz look to last for 4-8 weeks

While I haven’t had a chance to personally use the product, I’d love to try it on a client. This treatment only runs about $18 and is sold in most beauty supply stores. Check out the photos from the Luster’s You Be-Natural Botanical Curl Stretch and Defining Treatment event held at the Dream Hotel in NYC. Lusters’ also included beauty pampering for the attendees.
