Hairstylist Supply List

Brushes and Combs

The fundamental tools needed to create hairstyles.

Classic Styling Brush: Great for blow dries, flat wrap dries, de-tangling, and much more.

Natural Boar Bristle Brush: Adds body and shine by redistributing oils, excellent for big bouncy styles as well as sleek styles.

Ceramic Round Brush: Great for round brush blow drying hair that is fine or limp. The ceramic material

conducts the heat acts similarly to a curling iron.

Boar Bristle and Heat Resistant Nylon: This is the top of the line brush for smoothly blow drying thick, coarse, and resistant hair straight while keeping its volume. Smooths the hair cuticle while reducing frizz.

Pin Tail Combs: My go to comb for styling and flat ironing. I prefer a metal tip to create strong parts and create tight curl patterns.

Large Styling Rat Tail Comb: Perfect for finishing styles and combing out curls.

Foundation

What products are needed to make a style last?

Leave-in Conditioner: It’s important to apply a moisturizer and heat protectant to hair before layering on styling products and using hot tools.

Dry Shampoo: Reduces product build up.

Thickening Spray: I love to add fullness and volume to hair before I dry it. Keep in mind that most of the world doesn’t have think hair that can hold a style all day and under hot photography lights.

Uplifting Foam: Great for really fine hair that needs an extra boost, hold a curl, and even clip in hair extensions.

Molding Foam: This is great for all textured hair before ANY heat style. Think of the use of foam in the same way as doing a wet set or wrap. This is done to create the lasting foundation for the style.

Curly Hair Gel: Use different types depending on the clients curl pattern.

Curly Hair Cream: I vary the curly products in my kit. I choose the types depending on drying time. Time is always a huge factor in creating a style.

Tip: All foundation products can be used on textured hair.

Styling Products

What do you need to get the desired style?

Shine Serum: I use this on every hair texture, many times in the place of oil to create a shiny look without the weight. Plus it is far less likely to stain the client or model’s wardrobe,

Spray Oil: I generally prefer oil in a spray bottle to avoid using a heavy hand in application. Also, a little oil can go a long way.To much oild can make it difficult to change the style for the next look.

Styling Gel: Perfect to mold sleek styles, control the hairline and fly aways, or create direction in a within the style. I also prefer this to most edge tamers for the hairline and for creating detailed braided hairstyles.

Heat Styling Spray: Best used with hot tools as a heat protectant. Also great for setting curls created with hot tools in place to cool for a stronger hold.

Mattyfying Texture Powder: Removes the moisture from the hair and allows the hair to retain a textured look and high volume.

Styling Paste: Used to create texture and or spikes, generally on short or fine hair.

Hot Tools

Shears and a Razor: Be prepared to shape a hairstyle or wig at any time. pack them in a cushioned holder.

Blow Dryer (with nozzle/concentrator): Needed to dry the hair, set curls, and secure the base of most on set styles. A Nozzle/concentrator directs the hair. My preference is normally Tourmaline.

Diffuser: It’s principle use is for curly hair drying. Allows the hair to dry without being disturbed. Collapsible preferred.

Heat Sock: This flexible diffuser allows you dry even the most fragile hair style.

Marcel Curling Irons: Professional electric curling irons allow you to curl the hair and use the tip of the iron without the added weight and safety concerns of a stove on-set. I prefer ceramic or tourmaline irons.

Flat Irons: Great tool used for everything ranging from straightening and smoothing hair to adding bouncy curls or flat waves. Sizes needed: 1/4 inch to 1 1.2 inch

Heated Tools: Such as an edge tamer or hot comb to smooth the hair line or fly aways.

Tip: A tiny flat iron is perfect for the hairline and short hair styles.

Finishing Products

What do you need to secure the style?

Shine Spray: My absolute must have is shine spray. Provides a shiny non greesy finish. This is different from oil sheen. I generally avoid oil sheen as it can be heavy and has been known to leave slippery oil spots on the ground near work stations, which is a hazard.

Light Holding Spray: This is awesome for the client who doesn’t like to feel product in her hair or for model who is taking extremely bright and close up photos, many times heavy hairspray is visible in the photos.

Holding Spray: Medium hold aerosol hairspray in my main hairspray. I use a spray that can be used on all textures without the fear of the spray wetting the hair and adding frizz.

Extreme Hold: Every kit needs a concrete style super strong hold for the rare occasion that you are asked to name 18 inch thick hair stand straight up or to make an updo hold in place during a windy beach wedding scene.

Hair Fibers: Many times our job is to make the hair look fuller and thicker. This is a must have!

Hair Color: Great for covering grey and blending hair extensions.

Sanitation

Help to keep everyone helathy!

Barbicide: This is used to soak and sanitize your CLEAN combs and brushes.

Pore-less glass Holder: This is needed to hold the barbicide and tools while soaking.

Multiple Sets of Combs and Brushes: Use different combs and brushes for each clients.

Antibacterial Wipes: To clean your area, products, and tools.

Personal Protection Equipment (PPE):

N95 Respirator Masks: To protect yourself and others from mouth and nasal fluids.

Protective Eye/Facial Covers: To avoid bodily fluids unintentionally getting in the eyes.

.

How will you transport your kit to the location of the set?

Burton Wheelie Flight Deck Travel Bag (Suitcase): This is the most sturdy travel kit I’ve ever used. The heels stand up to NYC streets, it fits overhead on flights, and has a lifetime warranty.

Travel Packing Cubes: These packing cubes will help you to stay organized. That will cut down on your set up and even styling time.

Leak Proof Refillable Containers: Separate some of your liquids into a smaller containers. You will minimize your risk of breaking them, loosing them, and simply carrying the weight.

Decorative Mats or Towels: When setting up your station you always want to leave is cleaner then when you arrive. You will seldom have the opportunity to work in a salon setting.
