My Step-By-Step Process to Achieve Michelle Breyer’s Stunning Bounty of Curls Revealed at Texture On The Runway founder, Michelle Breyer, celebrate the site’s 20th anniversary by revealing her new look created by celebrity NYC hairstylist Monaè Everett at the Texture On the Runway NYFW event

This year’s NYFW kicked off with a bang as showcased some of the fiercest natural hair looks to ever grace a runway stage at Texture On The Runway.  Amidst the more than 900 influencers, media and VIPs who filled NYC’s Iconic Gotham Hall to help the Texture On The Runway celebrate their  20th anniversary, it was NaturallyCurly co-founder Michelle Breyer who stole the show with a new ‘do, outside of her comfort zone, crafted by me! Michelle stepped up her everyday curly look by hitting the runway revealing a hot, new makeover, giving Love &  Hip Hop Miami co-host, Amara La Negra, a run with her beautiful, bountiful curls. I amplified Michelle’s signature style with clip-in hair extensions to add volume and length. Then I colored the extensions using the Pintura method, which was created especially for curly girls. The finished look was a head full of big, bouncy, curls with splashes of toffee and caramel highlights, perfect for its close up in Texture On The Runway.

I was delighted to style Michelle for the show, she is beautiful both inside and out. It meant the world to me that she allowed me to transform her. I was able to present her as the vivacious supermodel I see when I envision her

Here’s my step-by-step process to achieve Michelle’s bouncy runway curls:

1) I ordered curly hair extensions from Kurly Klips with a texture very similar to Michelle’s natural texture.

2) Once receiving the extensions, I lightened the clip-in pieces using the Pintura technique, which works best for curly hair. It allows me to hand paint the hair color exactly where I want it to be, maximizing visibility. I toned the lightened hair to perfectly matching shades of toffee and caramel.

3) I clipped in both bundles of extensions, which measured 20″ and 22″ to add fullness and volume.

4) Once all of the clip-ins were applied, I dampened Michelle’s hair and applied the Ouidad Climate Control line to begin styling. I started with the leave in and Detangling Heat Spray, then followed with the Climate Control Gel.

5) I blow dried the hair using my BabylissPRO Titanium blow dryer

6) Once the hair was dry, I sprayed large sections of the hair with the Oribe Soft Lacquer Heat spray. Then I curled half-inch sections of hair with my BabylissPRO 3/4 Marcel Iron.

7) Razor cut the extensions for the best blend with Michelle’s natural hair.

8) I followed with a wide tooth comb to backcomb the hair and capitalize on the newly added volume and fullness thanks to the extensions.

9) Lastly, I finished the style with the Oribe Superfine hairspray.

In addition to getting Michelle Breyer runway ready, I joined Texture On The Runway to broadcast on Mane Moves, along with co-host, Bre Scullark, who provided commentary through an up close and personal look at all the hair and fashion slayage before and after the show.  It was an incredible experience to co-host the Mane Moves live coverage of Texture in the Runway and I enjoyed interviewing the top decision makers in the hair industry as well as expressing my opinion on each brand’s stage show. I loved the fact that Texture On The Runway focused on the many hair textures of the world and they were all showcased within the runway show.  CLICK HERE to watch the Mane Moves live broadcast of Texture On The Runway that I hosted!

R&B Sensation H.E.R. Reveals Sultry Tresses On Rolling Out Cover, Styled by Monaè Everett

First, let me say that I love styling H.E.R. (Having Everything Revealed) for editorial shoots. Most recently, H.E.R’s beautiful curls were displayed on the cover of RollingOut magazine. The cover shoot showcases H.E.R. letting her hair down in waves that cascade to her mid back, adding just the right amount of drama, softness, and sass to the tatted, swagged out R&B songstress’ cover photo. Using a keen eye for detail I crafted the perfect look for this cover shoot that captured the mood of H.E.R.’s music.

For the RollingOut shoot, I sprayed her damp hair with Ouidad’s Advanced Climate Control Detangling Spray and applied the Ouidad’s Advanced Climate Control Heat and Humidity Gel using the rake and shake technique. I diffused her hair with the BabylissPRO blow dryer. After the hair was dry, I sprayed the hair with Oribe Heat Lacquer spray and a little Ouidad Mongongo Oil Multi-Use Curl Treatment. Next, I used the BabylissPRO Nano Titanium 3/4″ curling iron to touch up any loose curls. I used a wide tooth comb to pick apart the curls and add fullness. Lastly, I finished the style with the IGK Laid Back Defrizz and Anti-Static Spray.

The styles I created for H.E.R. are not only featured in Rolling Out magazine but also in a 3-part video series published on Rolling Out’s site featuring exclusive access to the cover shoot behind the scenes.

Queen Sugar Actress Dawn-Lyen Gardner Undergoes a Naturally Curly Big Chop by Monaè Everett

Dawn-Lyen Gardner Before and After Big Chop
Before (left) and after (right) the big chop! CLICK HERE to see full transformation.

Take a look at this transformation I gave Dawn-Lyen Gardner of Queen Sugar to enhance and show off her natural curls! Chopping off over six inches of hair and adding bangs might seem like a daring transition, but after working with an extensive list of A-list clientele which includes big names like Lilimar Hernandez, H.E.R.,   Lizzy Greene, Skylar Diggins, and Taraji P. Henson, you can bet that Dawn-Lyen was in perfect hands for her big chop. Sporting her new cut on her Instagram, Dawn-Lyen traded in her longer than shoulder length hair for bob-length curls that were defined with the use of the Ouidad Advanced Climate Control System.

Ouidad Climate control system

Before styling, I used the Advanced Climate Control Detangling Spray to protect against damage and prevent frizz. Creating small sections, I used the “shake and rake” curl technique using the VitaCurl Define & Shine Styling Gel Cream and the Heat and Humidity Gel to provide control and definition without heavy product buildup. Afterward, I defused Dawn-Lyen’s hair with my BabylissPro SteelFX blowdryer, finishing everything off with a few spritzes of Ouidad’s Mongongo Oil to ensure that Dawn-Lyen’s hair stayed frizz free and hydrated as I loosened and picked-out curls to add volume.

BET Releases New Black Girls Rock Natural Hair Styling Tutorials

Click the image above to view all the styles by Monaè Everett in collaboration with BET and Mielle Organics.

To help black girls rock in every aspect, especially in their natural hair, BET enlisted my help to do a series of hair styling tutorials using products by MielleOrganics. BET released the video series in conjunction with the recent broadcast of Black Girls Rock– an annual award show that honors and promotes Black women in different fields involving music, entertainment, medicine, entrepreneurship, and visionary aspects.  In these step-by-step tutorials, you’ll learn how to rock a pineapple updo, style a twisted updo, and pull off a curly frohawk.

Below, is breakdown of quick styling tips as demonstrated in the video series:

Curly FroHawk

I used the Mielle Organics Scalp and Hair Strengthening Oil to nourish the scalp before using the Mielle Organics curl mouse and edge control gel to add definition and hold to the model’s curls. I then parted hair in sections, rolled under the ends and secured with a bobby pin. and pinned up the hair after tucking under the ends.  The style’s finished look consisted of two tousled buns on the top and middle of the head, a hanging ponytail in the back, and two small single cornrows nicely flowing near the ear.

Twisted Updo

For a twisted updo style, I began spritzing the model’s hair with Mielle Organics Leave-in Conditioner. I followed with Mielle Organics’ edge gel, styling gel, and twisting souffle. Next, I created a single cornrow in a halo design, leaving the ends of most of the style free in order to design in the desired shape for a twisted top knot.

Pineapple Updo

I put my own twist on the tried and true pineapple updo. I started by parting the hair, then adding in the Mielle Organics’ Leave in Conditioner, plus edge gel, and Brazilian Curly Cocktail Curl Cream. Then I spritzed the hair with a little water then lightly brushed the hair into a FroHawk updo. Afterwards , I diffused the hair and adding some unique hair accessories throughout.

Take a Look at Some of These Weather-Proof, Festival-Ready Hairstyles for Naturally Curly and Kinky Textures

Models Mominatu and Fan Banks posing with styles by Monaé after a live hair demo at CurlFest

This festival season the curls have ruled! However, for those with naturally curly and kinky textures, the curls and kinks may not always keep their shape, especially when you throw in a mix of humid weather, heavy dancing, crowds of people brushing against you, and more elements you can’t control at outdoors festivals. I recently joined CurlFest on their Facebook Live broadcast to explain some of the best practices for keeping hair cute, neat, and controlled during the outdoor festival season– no matter the hair type.

While on the CurlFest Facebook Live broadcast, I demonstrated on two kinky and curly-haired models to share the following two tips for haute, easily controlled festival-ready hairstyles:

  1. Be creative and add jewels to the hair in multiple sections for photo-worthy hair from every angle!
  2. Rock big, fluffy hair, but feel free to add braided details to the front of the hair. It doubles as a functional design.

For festival hair, you want your hair to be big and eye-catching.  Don’t do your normal pull-back style. Go big. Accessorize. Add jewels. Add some gold. Add some silver. Make people look at you. You took your time to get dressed and do your hair. Bask in the glory of your big, bouncy tresses.

BET’s much-anticipated show, Black Girls Rock — an annual award show that honors and promotes Black women in different fields involving music, entertainment, medicine, entrepreneurship, and visionary aspects. You may have noticed stylish naturalista and Roc Nation’s up and coming singer-songwriter, Victory Boyd, strut down the Black Girls Rock red carpet rocking an original hairstyle that screamed #BlackGirlMagic — a pinned-up, tall, stout, tousled updo. This carefree ‘do is a perfect representation of the free-spirited songstress’ unique style and personality. Victory’s music is a fusion of soul music and folk music with a pinch of spiritual depth– a side of her that she brings out in her hairstyles and fashion.

I had so much fun styling Victory’s tresses for the Black Girls Rock red carpet and performance, and I have the please of styling her hair for numerous other events as well! Through the years I have had my work featured on Harper’s BAZAARESSENCEInStyleGlamour, CNN, and Yahoo! Beauty. As a celebrity stylist I have also been able to work with talents such as Lilimar HernandezLizzy GreeneSofia WylieSkylar DigginsDawn-Lyen GardnerTaraji P. Henson, and many more.

When styling Victory’s hair, I combined my professional styling techniques with a flair for originality to help Victory stay true to her personal style. For Black Girls Rock, I styled Victory’s hair using Mizani and Ouidad products, giving her natural coils volume and a little drama to match her stand-out, soulful, colorful style. For Victory, it’s important that I nourish her natural texture while using style elements that not only brings out her personality but also gives her a polished, yet funky, look that always compliments her fashion as well as her music.

In addition to the BET’s Black Girls Rock appearance, I have styled Victory for a multitude of other occasions. During her Good Morning America performance, Victory rocked an afro with a pinned up side secured by a cute hair accessory. For her BET Awards 2018 appearance, and her national anthem performance for an MLB  charity game, I styled Victory’s hair in a big, fluffy, afro with twisted-out ends that distinctively, and perfectly, framed Victory’s entire face.
