Southern Bride Wedding Hair and Makeup Feature

Hello everyone, I hope that you had a wonderful and love filled weekend. Whether you showed yourself some love or spent time with a loved one, this should have been a weekend of enjoyment. As always with the weekend of love, many people became engaged and others got married. This weekend reminded me of one of my favorite recent couples, the Amasos. I provided wedding hair and makeup for the bridal party.

It was such a pleasure to provide wedding hair and makeup services for this gorgeous wedding. The Amasos’ Nigerian Nights themed wedding was a sight behold. It was a beautiful blend of both Nigerian and Southern American traditions.

Working with a bride who desires a look that reflects a fusion of two different cultures can be a challenge for some hair and makeup artists. This proved an easy task for me when I worked this gorgeous bride, Jasmine.

To keep within the traditional Nigerian bridal makeup we kept Jasmine’s makeup in the golden to bronze metallic family. While making sure to apply makeup so it would stay throughout the festivities, I made sure to avoid heavy makeup. The key is to accentuate your best facial features. Jasmine’s look focused on accentuating her fabulous bone structure. We used bronzer to contour her features and added a neutral lip color. This made her beautiful eyes sparkle.

Since her hair needed to be versatile enough to be displayed in her American wedding gown and covered with her Gele (Nigerian head wrap), I created a personalized updo. Jasmine adds definition to her curly/natural hair texture with two strand and three strand twist sets. Once the twists have dried, they are released using a light natural oil like coconut oil, leaving more defined ringlets. I added large twists to the back of her hair, twisting the hair upward toward the crown. I left just enough hair out at the top to cascade at the hairline. The look was topped off with a beautiful pearl headpiece that we arranged from the back of the head and across the forehead.

As the photos display, the wedding festivities were amazing. I would like to thank the Amosos for allowing Brides Made Up by Monae Artistry to be apart of their special day. And major shouts out the Southern Bride magazine for the feature.

Behind the Scenes of Seasons of Love Beauty

Did you catch Lifetime’s Seasons of Love? I was the Key Hairstylist on set. It was an amazing opportunity and I learned a lot on set. The film stars Taraji P Henson, Letoya Luckett, the legendary Mrs. Gladys Knight, Shannon Kane, Ana Isabelle, and Method Man. For an inside look at my mane moves and details about the movie, see below.

Taraji’s light-hearted character, Jackie, needed a fun hairstyle to match. We styled her medium length bob with Bumble and Bumble products to keep each style voluminous and touchable. The Defrizz kept her hair both smooth and bouncy.

Latoya plays a “no nonsense” career woman. To keep each strand of her mid-back length hair in place I used a pomade to smooth her fly-aways and the Redken Shine Flash spray to keep her mane shiny and beautiful.

Gladys Knight, the family matriarch kept her short styles chic. Using a ¾ inch flat iron I beveled her hair into place. Her hair was coiffed with Redken Shine Flash spray and detailed with the Sebastian Reshaper Spray.

We kept Imani’s, played by Shannon Kane, enviable curls intact by using Deva Chan products. We started each day by cleansing with the No Poo, conditioning with the Heaven in Hair, and setting the curls with the Arc Angel gel. We added a braid in most scenes to highlight Imani’s romantic personality.

Ana Isabelle’s hair was a huge aspect of Randi’s vivacious character. We used the Bumble and Bumble Defrizz and Schwarzkopf Grip mousse during her blow dry. Whether her hair was flat ironed pin straight or curled into big sexy waves, these added shape, hold, and volume to each style.

Lusters’ YOU Be-Natural Product Launch Event in NYC

Luster’s has done it again. The same people who brought you my childhood go to Pink Oil Moisturizer, have released a new product line, this one target’s the natural hair sector. It’s their new YOU Be-Natural Line. Which is all about learning to work with your natural hair texture.

Luster’s You Be-Natural Botanical Curl Stretch and Defining Treatment was the featured product of the night. According to hairstylist, Lusters’ ambassador, Kevin “K.P. the Texture Man”  Pendleton, the You Be-Natural Botanical Curl Stretch and Defining Treatment alone doesn’t stretch and relax the curl, it’s the (optional) heat used with the treatment. Hair color, relaxers, and other chemicals can strip the protein in hair by at least 30%. The treatment is made of plant-based amino acids that bind to the hair, restoring any protein loss. This allows moisture to penetrate the hair shaft.

Pendelton explained that if you can choose to use heat for more intense results. The product is sealed into the hair shaft by the flat-iron and acts as an anti-humectant, so you can expect less frizz. Most of us wouldn’t mind minimizing our frizz, especially in the spring and summer. YOU Be-Natural’s number 1 claim is that they simply stretch your hair’s natural curl with no risk of permanent changes. They even claim that the with proper care and the use of sulfate-free shampoos you can expect your stretched, reduced frizz look to last for 4-8 weeks

While I haven’t had a chance to personally use the product, I’d love to try it on a client. This treatment only runs about $18 and is sold in most beauty supply stores. Check out the photos from the Luster’s You Be-Natural Botanical Curl Stretch and Defining Treatment event held at the Dream Hotel in NYC. Lusters’ also included beauty pampering for the attendees. Makeup for P. Diddy’s Mother Janice Combs

Kim Porter, P. Diddy, and Ms. Janice Combs (makeup by Monae Everett) Review by TheYBF
Kim Porter, P. Diddy, and Ms. Janice Combs (makeup by Monae Everett) Review by TheYBF

Guess who had the pleasure of working on the one and only Janice Combs (P. Diddy’s mother)? I did her makeup before she supported her grandchildren during Kids Fashion Week in NYC.

It was a pleasure to work with Ms. Combs. She was a kind woman who knows what looks good on her. To my great pleasure, her makeup and overall look received glowing reviews.
TheYBF.com said it “Looks like she’s had a makeover and we’re loving it”. This was the first time my work was publicly reviewed on a blog, and I am over the moon with excitement.

“O Magazine Live Your Best Life” Weekend

Reggie Wells and Monae Everett at the “O Magazine Live Your Best Life” weekend

This life of a professional hair and makeup artist has opened many doors. I had the pleasure to work for L’Oreal Paris at Oprah “O Magazine Live Your Best Life”  weekend celebration in NYC. This celebration marked the 10th anniversary of Oprah Winfrey’s “O” magazine. Ms. Winfrey brought in ten product lines that give to ten different charities. L’Oreal Paris’ “The Color of Hope” charity has helped to raise more than $18 million in the fight against ovarian cancer. The funds help to promote awareness and advance research about ovarian cancer.

The fight against ovarian cancer is a very personal and important cause for me. It was an honor to work on this major event, which focused on promoting a great life and taking care of one’s self, physically, mentally, and emotionally.

I worked as a hair color expert for L’Oreal Paris. I recommended hair styling products and hair color that worked for each individual. Though it was a long and busy day, I gave product recommendations at least 80 women.  It was absolutely amazing. It was great to see so many women who are happy, smiling, and eager to learn. I learned that many women just need a few helpful tips to understand the vast variety of hair options on the market.

Johnny Lavoy at the “O Magazine Live Your Best Life” weekend

It felt great to work beside wonderful artists such as Johnny Lavoy (L’Oreal Hair Expert) and meet the legendary Reggie Wells, Oprah Winfrey’s longtime makeup artist.

I look forward to other opportunities to display my talent.

The long lines at L’Oreal both for hair and makeup. “O Magazine Live Your Best Life” weekend.
