To help black girls rock in every aspect, especially in their natural hair, BET enlisted my help to do a series of hair styling tutorials using products by MielleOrganics.

BET released the video series in conjunction with the recent broadcast of Black Girls Rock– an annual award show that honors and promotes Black women in different fields involving music, entertainment, medicine, entrepreneurship, and visionary aspects. In these step-by-step tutorials, you’ll learn how to rock a pineapple updo, style a twisted updo, and pull off a curly frohawk.

Below, is breakdown of quick styling tips as demonstrated in the video series:

Curly FroHawk

I used the Mielle Organics Scalp and Hair Strengthening Oil to nourish the scalp before using the Mielle Organics curl mouse and edge control gel to add definition and hold to the model’s curls. I then parted hair in sections, rolled under the ends and secured with a bobby pin. and pinned up the hair after tucking under the ends.

The style’s finished look consisted of two tousled buns on the top and middle of the head, a hanging ponytail in the back, and two small single cornrows nicely flowing near the ear.

Twisted Updo

Twisted Updo

For a twisted updo style, I began spritzing the model’s hair with Mielle Organics Leave-in Conditioner. I followed with Mielle Organics’ edge gel, styling gel, and twisting souffle. Next, I created a single cornrow in a halo design, leaving the ends of most of the style free in order to design in the desired shape for a twisted top knot.

Pineapple Updo

I put my own twist on the tried and true pineapple updo. I started by parting the hair, then adding in the Mielle Organics’ Leave in Conditioner, plus edge gel, and Brazilian Curly Cocktail Curl Cream.

Then I spritzed the hair with a little water then lightly brushed the hair into a FroHawk updo. Afterwards , I diffused the hair and adding some unique hair accessories throughout.
